Finding grants specifically targeted to African-American women can be challenging. A better way to begin searching for start-up funds is to look for funds targeted to minorities and women. When searching for funds, read through the grant eligibility section to ensure the business meets grant requirements. African-American women can also look at industry-specific grants.

Huggies Mom-inspired Grant Program
Huggies' grant program offers $15,000 in seed money and business resources, as of 2011, to help women develop original product ideas and start businesses that help improve the lives of parents. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and live in the U.S. Products should focus on prenatal care through early childhood up to six years of age. Applicants will be judged in five areas: adherence to eligibility rules, stage of idea or business development, commercial viability, a product that solves an important parenting issue and originality and creativity.

Business Owners' Idea Café Small Business Grant
A small business is awarded a grant of $1,000 plus $1,500 in advertising opportunities with this grant program. It is open to anyone who currently owns a business in existence for at least six months. Applications for the grant are received from April 13th through June 12th. The voting stage is from July 1st through October 1st. A total of 150 finalists are chosen from the applications received. Second and third place winners receive $500 worth of advertising.

Federal Grants
To locate grants through the federal government, a great place to begin is with their grant database website, Grants.gov. Searches are conducted by category, agency and Recovery Act opportunities. Many of the grants offered to businesses are given to nonprofits helping businesses in their communities and to organizations and companies that do business with the federal government as contractors. Another place African-American women business owners should consider is the federal government's Minority Business Development Agency, which has local offices around the country and may help business owners find local grant sources.

State and Local Grants
When trying to locate local business grants, African-American women can start with their state's grant office. These offices have lists of all federal, state and local grant opportunities in the state for everything from housing and education to business. Business owners can locate their state's office through a link on the U.S. Economic Development Administration website. Many state and local grants are given to companies that will produce jobs and further the economic growth of industries in that state. The state and local governments also have similar grants to those offered by the federal government that they award to companies that can work with the state or local government as contractors. They will also have a list of companies and foundations in the state that are awarding grants targeted at minorities and women.

There is something that we at HomeBizWomen jokingly call the "Murphy's Law of Money" which states that it is ten times more difficult to convince an organization to give you money, than it is for you to give them money!

Though Grant Woman does not have evidence of this "Murphy's Law" we have observed it in action over and over. We would add to this that in most circumstances it is easier to get a loan than to go through the intensive research and grant writing process required to successfully get a grant.

Remember that for a woman to get a grant requires an extensive amount of documentation and record keeping. There are rules you'll need to follow and you'll need to keep detailed track of your income and expenditures.

The key to receiving grant money lies within your personal grant proposal. Your grant proposal will explain to the grant agency why you need financial assistance.

Federal Grants For Women

In our research so far, Grant Woman has discovered that contrary to popular belief, there are few federal grants for women available to start a home business. The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses. It does offer loan programs and the few grants for women they offer are for organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These women's grants are mostly for non-profits, lending institutions, or local and state government.

There is a list of all federally funded assistance programs in the US which you can look through. These are listed in the Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance. Where do you go if the government doesn't offer grants for women owned businesses? Some foundations and corporations offer grants for women, and some smaller companies also offer grants.
